Toronto Vandalism

Illegal graffiti is what 99% of society hates. They hate it because it’s ugly. They hate it because it’s messy. They hate how they have no consent in the process or the message. I wish I shot more of it in the 90s because now I mostly focus on tags. Nothing is off limits in this section and includes walls, trucks, and doors (which have their own section). “Bombing” is how graffiti writers refer to the act. Some people only bomb; very few writers paint everything, and you have a mix in between who dabble in phases. Silvers, rooftops, transit, tags. There is always a debate on who has the best style and who is the most up. Very few have good spots, and it seems like the new generation just likes street level and going over murals and windows. In the 90s it was more precarious - rooftops, ledges, billboards. Some of my favourites include Orek, Hunch, and Forte. My documentation of illegal graffiti greatly increased with digital photography and went to the next level with my phone. Tags are everywhere. I’m always looking to find tags and stickers out in the wild. Most people don't appreciate it, or the images - but most of the views I have on social media are photos of vandalism, not sunsets.
