Detroit Graffiti

Detroit was once known as the bankrupt Motor City. Detroit is dominated by the automobile industry and infrastructure, and this makes the graffiti in the city quite different, with more spread-out bombing. Both the placement and location as well as its style and execution are unique - and also alot of more legal work in places like the Eastern Market. There were a few spots I checked out on my first visit in 2011; the city was noticeably lacking in bombing and legal walls, with the entire derelict downtown having zero pieces. I’ve visited regularly since, and Eastern Market is now filled with murals and street art - but also lacking in graffiti. For a city that's roughly the same size as Toronto, it’s surprising. I’ve found random productions, but most of this work is from out-of-town people who visit. Most of what you will see here is from the Eastern Market - Murals in the market, 1xrun projects and the Grand River Creative Corridor, Hamtramck, Michigan Ave, Mexicantown, and the immediate surrounding area, most of these being legal spaces.
