Concrete
Concrete is everywhere in our lives. We no longer see it since has been woven into the fabric of everyday life from the buildings we live and work in and also in the pipes and tunnels where our invisible services of power, water and data flow to the sidewalks and roads we travel on. Concrete has also been used by artists for almost a century and has magical properties that durable and affordable for all. This gallery shows examples of the built environment both above and below ground with some of my favourite examples being Habitat '67, Montreal's Olympic Stadium and architects such as Safdie, Prii, Tallibert, Revell, Yamasaki and Saarinen featured here. Concrete is greatly associated with the 20th century (specifically Brutalism) however it's been around in various formulations since the roman times. I've included examples large and small as well as quarries and facilities to illustrate the whole cycle of creation, recycling and making of new buildings and things in our lives.
