Neon signs are objects I've felt attracted to since I was a child. They were my first introduction to ASMR experiences since they had a very specific glow and sound to them and seem to alter the spaces they were in. I was delighted by them a tad too much - so I decided to document them after I started noticing them vanishing in my own neighbourhood in the late 90s. Neon was still in everything when I was a child in the 80s, including phones and radios. Every great restaurant had one that just lit up the night sky when you went there, and they all had an individual touch to them that signified the business in a way plastic and LEDs don't today. Other small family businesses had them too, and they were disappearing symbols of the past when private equity and large corporations did not dominate every part of our lives. The vast majority of these signs were photographed between 2002 and the present day in many of the places I visited to photograph Rust Belt industry, located in Toronto and Southwestern Ontario, but also Michigan and New York State.
